Stair-treads and landings in expanded metal mesh

Stair-treads & Landings: all you have to know

All Fils steps and landings are certified according to the new legislation in force (NTC 2018 - Ministerial Decree of 17/01/2018) which defines the distributed loads and concentrated loads to be considered to guarantee maximum safety. They are also certified non-slip, an indispensable feature for safety stairs.

All about stair treads and landings

How should steps and landings be chosen for a staircase?

As a first step it is necessary to identify the category of the building according to the expected crowding. In fact, one of the essential innovations, compared to the previous version, is the precise treatment of the stairs overloads for the different categories of use of the buildings. Table 3.I.II - in paragraph 3.1.4 OVERLOADS shows the values of the flow rates applicable to the STEPS and the LANDINGS, specified for each category and subcategory.

The 4 categories of interest are:

  A   Environments for residential use
  B Offices
  C Environments susceptible to crowding
  D Environments for commercial use

What does the law require for steps and landings?

The new NTC 2018 standard is more stringent. For categories C3, C4, C5, D2, where previously the capacity of 408 kg /m2 (distributed load) and 408 kg (concentrated load) was required, now a capacity of 510 kg/m2 (distributed load) and 510 is required Kg (concentrated load). Table 3.I.II (on page 3 of the Link) - in paragraph 3.1.4 OVERLOADS shows the values of the flow rates applicable to the STEPS and LANDINGS, specified for each category.

What is the range of expanded metal steps and landings?

Step models available from the stock and link to the relative technical sheets.

For safety stairs, measures of 1200 mm or multiples of 600 mm are required by law.

What are the advantages and benefits of expanded metal steps and landings?

The risks of slipping and tripping are some of the most common and most harmful dangers for people. For this reason, the walkway surfaces must guarantee safe walking thanks to an adequate friction coefficient. In addition, for those who suffer from vertigo, the view from the top down, must be masked, especially in the descent, with a material that is not very open.

Below are the complementary characteristics of the steps and landings in expanded metal.

  • NON-SLIP - To prevent the risk of slipping or falling, stretched gratings with non-slip coefficients R12 or R13 are used, as defined by the DIN 51130 Standard.
  • ANTI-HEEL - The opening of the shirt must prevent a shoe with a thin heel from slipping into the grid, causing the person's imbalance with the consequent possibility of falling. This also applies to umbrellas, ski poles and other sharp objects.
  • ANTI-ICE - In the mountains or at low temperatures where snow or ice can form, the openings of the grate favor the outflow of the liquid parts.
  • ANTI-PANIC - Thanks to the shape of the mesh, the expanded mesh grid limits the view of the void below and avoids the sense of "vertigo" that could affect the person looking down
